Many small amenities offered while traveling can add up to a large sum if your not careful. Some of the items that make a vacation just a little nicer can be less expensive if you follow a few simple suggestions. COMMUNICATIONS People enjoy keeping in touch while on vacation. Using foreign telephones can be troublesomem confusing, and costly. Bring your cell phone when you are traveling abroad if it has international service. Most cell phones work while at sea and are a lot cheaper than using ship to shore lines that can run up to $15 a minute, Another way to keep in touch is by the internet. Most ships and ports of call have internet cafes. Prices for internet use aboard ships are generally $1 a minute but are cheaper ashore. A hint to lessen the bill, prepare your outgoing email before you get online and then you are ready to send them once you connect (saves minutes). Always leave phone numbers where you can be reached when traveling (hotel numbers, tour operator numbers, cards provided by cruise lines, and you own cell numbers with a relative or friend. HEALTH While traveling always have a small first aid kit with you (aspirin, bandages, antacids etc.) along with your prescription medications. A trip to a local or ships doctor can be expensive (another reason to have trip insurance). Sea sickness is almost unheard of these days. The newer, bigger ships and all the modern technologies have just about eliminated this concern. If you are motion sickness prone, bring a motion sickness remedy with you. LAUNDRY SERVICES When traveling, laundry service provided by your vacation supplier can be extremely expensive. Check to see if they have a laundromat type facility for quests use. Usually there is one available. Bring a small bnox of detergent along in you luggage. PICTURES Buying photos taken by professionls while on vacation can add up. Taking along a few disposable cameras can save a lot and provide you with many memories later. Digital cameras can be used, however, if you are leary of taking an expensive digital camera with you while traveling you might consider purchasing a cheap one for your vacation. OFF SEASON TRAVEL Another way to save some dollare when traveling to Europe or other destinations, is to go during the off season. There are great discounts during the winter in Europe, reduced cruising rates when schools are IN session, and usually immediately after Holidays. A little planning can save you dollars.
